Customer Reviews

Not as good as the originalMy brother and I had this game when we were little back in the late 70's / early 80's. We played it quite a bit and always had a great time. My nephew, who just turned 4, saw the game advertised on TV and wanted it for his birthday very badly. I bought it for him and was excited to watch him play it. After his party we put the game together and were quickly disappointed. Not only is the game half as big as it used to be (it's really small now), but the heads of the robots are so tight that no matter how many jabs they take, they won't pop up. We tried everything to loosen them up but nothing seemed to work. My nephew quickly grew frustrated with it and now won't play it because "it's not any fun; nothing happens". My brother and I have tried playing it and still it doesn't work. I guess they just don't make 'em like they used to. 2Definitely NOT like the Original!Like many other reviewers, I have to say that I am disappointed in the quality of this toy. It's not anything like the original. I'm actually the child of a Baby Boomer and remember playing my dad's Rock 'Em Sock 'Em game as a kid. I was thrilled to find this so my son could play it (he had seen it in Toy Story), but it was very disappointing. It is made of cheep plastic, the poles for the ropes don't stay in place, they are smaller than the originals and it is missing the sound that the original made with a head pops up. Unlike my dad's, I do not expect this toy to last long enough for my son to pass it down to his son. I wish I knew what happened to the one in my Grandma's basement! 1Not like the originalThe game is advertised as having the distinctive original sound when a robot's is KO'd. There's no sound at all in mine. It's just a click. I have bought the game twice in the past few months looking for the original sound. 1It's much better now, but it wasn't an exact scienceThis is a newer, smaller version than the one I grew up with. I got it for my 11-year-old niece, who was begging for it, but when we got it out of the box and I assembled it, not a block could be knocked off. A combination of soft plastic bases on the robots and catches on the necks that are too wide makes it nearly impossible to knock their blocks off. I wound up taking an X-acto knife to those catches and cut them down a bit. It's much better now, but it wasn't an exact science, and now the red one's head can be knocked off more easily than the blue one's. Disappointing. 3Junk As Soon As It Came Out of the BoxThis was a gift for my two boys for Christmas. My kids were excited for this game and so were my husband and I due to us having this old school game when we were younger. As soon as we took it out of the box and got it together, the blue robot's right arm wouldn't work. First time trying it out and it wouldn't move. The kids still tried playing with it (of course it wasn't a fair game anymore), after three rounds, the red robots head wouldn't stay locked down. It just stays up. So.... it was trash from the start. It looks like the old school game that I had when I was little, but I swear it's made with cheap parts. I would not suggest buying this. 1Unreal to know you can still get this gameAnd also unreal as to how much FUN SO many people had playing it!I bought it as a Gag Stress reliever for my co-workers here in Afghanistan, and I found we had to order another SEVEN (7) of them once I could not get mine back after a few days! In the world of computer and video games all over, it was such a surprise to see how this item became such a surprise. It was so well liked, that can you believe we actually scheduled a Rock 'Em Sock 'Em TOURNAMENT!?Yes, it is violent, but WE are adults in a combat area. I think we can manage. :-)Great price, fast shipping from this vendor. 5Rockem Sockem Is Still Fun 44 Years LaterJanuary 23 2010. I just received the Mattel Rockem Sockem Robots game yesterday. I am quite pleased with the quality of the version available of the classic 1966 Rockem Sockem Robots game. Everything looks just like it did when it first came out in 1966. Assembly of all the required parts was relatively simple. The robots themselves are smaller than when they first came out but nevertheless, they are identically detailed to the originals. I've seen some of the negative reviews about the robots not staying put on their pedestals and the ring ropes not staying put. After putting this newer version to the ultimate test, I found that everything held up quite well and the ring ropes never came off (not even once) from the retention holes. When assembling the robots to the pedestals you must make sure that the two tabs on the tips of their feet must line up with the pedestal slots and then to finally push down on the back heel of the foot to properly lock the feet in position. The robots never once popped off their pedestals while under use. It's recommended as stated on the box that an adult should assemble the components together to achieve the best performance. Overall, I loved this game as a child when it first came out and I love it again with Matell's latest version. The newer version is definitely recommended. 5Perfect game to play in short bursts of timeMy twin boys love this retro game! They are rough on toys and it's help up really well. Seems sturdy. We leave it out on the table in the playroom, and it's great for them to pop over and play for just a minute or two while waiting for me to come downstairs before school. Doesn't take up a lot of space and they can play it in short bursts. Perfect for my ADHD twins!! 5but I'm back looking at again now thinking I'll purchase it for my department just for a fun outlet, so I'm not giving this as aMy husband purchased this as a holiday elephant exchange at work a few years back and it was the most sought after gift. I have no idea how it works now as opposed to in my younger years as we didn't keep it, but I'm back looking at again now thinking I'll purchase it for my department just for a fun outlet, so I'm not giving this as a gift to a child, I'm giving it as a gift to my peers as nostalgia (for those of us who remember) and just for fun for all of us. 5Grandkid's Battleground!I bought this for my Grandkids - 2 boys (4 & 7). They love it! I remember the original, years back. It was fun to play then and it is fun to play now. I don't have the original to touch, but in my mind it was a bit larger than this one and it seems to me that the heads "pop up" easier on this new model. The boxing action doesn't last long before there is a victor. But the boys have fun. They play till one wins 5 rounds and then they move on to something else- like kids do. Maybe this way, the game will survive to fight another day! 5
