Customer Reviews

Great set, with some tweaksa fantastic set, fun and easy to put together, and fun for kids. (My four-year old daughter loved doing it) A few suggestions:1. Assemble and hang first, then paint (so your planets won't look like two halves stuck together). We hung ours in the shower to paint for easy cleanup and had a great time painting them as they turned.2. Prior to assembly, paint the hanging rack to match the color of your ceiling. The model looks beautiful except for the rack, which is blue, and stands out--if only they made it white to begin with!3. Apply glow in the dark paint direct from the tubes, in thick lines--if you spread it with a brush, the thin layer of glow paint will only glow faintly 5Smart and easy setThis was quite simple and a lot of fun to do with my kid. The instructions were very clear and everything fit together (mostly) like it was supposed to. There were a few flaws, however, that made me take off a star: It is smaller than it is made to look on the box. Some of the planets would not snap together fully, leaving a small gap at the equator. Finally, the paint has remained tacky even after several days of drying. Because the distance between the inner planets is so small, the tacky paint makes a few of the planets stick together. I also used some of my own acrylic paints to get the exact colors that I wanted. Overall, it is a smart little set and looks very good when done. 4NOT easy to work withNOT easy to work with. As I write this, I'm still trying to pry open the plastic center hanging structure so I can attach the wires. This mobile is too complicated for children to put together and its parts are too difficult for adult hands to manipulate. For example, if you want to hang Mercury accurately, you're supposed to tie 5 cm.(!) of fishing wire on both ends (!!) to one plastic hook and a plastic rod. Fishing wire, if you are not aware, does not tie easily to begin with. Way to difficult in dexterity for a child, and way to minute parts for an adult. Also, it only comes with one paintbrush for the painting, so you either have to get extra paint brushes or clean your brush every time you want to add another color (and many of the planets need more than one color to look realistic). I bought this for a solar system lesson I'm doing with my kids and am disappointed at the poor construction design. 2Good do it yourself learning for a 7 yr old.Small but great if you don't have space for a big permanent one. My daughter is 7 and really enjoyed painting and assembling this together. The plastic sphere halfs need to be snapped together which I found was hardest for her. If we had to do it again I would make sure I broke each one out of their holders one planet at a time. The reason is that some planets are the same size and the labeling is just one really small character printed on the inside of the shape. So, I just had to find, read and snap them together. She did all the painting and was able to read the gray arms that they sit on. They don't snap on so they can come off easily but so far we haven't lost a planet or the sun. My daughter has learned well with it and it was fun for her to do. Would recommend to others as a home learning device. 5Great, Simple, Fun, and SmallI'd give this 4.5 stars if that were an option (and why isn't it an option, by the way?). It was perfect for our needs as an elementary home school family. My first grader loved it and was able to learn from the 3D, hands-on experience. There's no better way to learn an abstract concept. I snapped the planets together and sanded them slightly with the sandpaper square to "rough them up" before painting, as suggested. My seven-year-old and I snapped them into position on the model and then painted them together. The paint adhered to the planets very well. The glow paint didn't work well when we mixed it with other paints, but it did work well on the planets that we applied it to as a top layer (just a little FYI). This model is very small, but that works well for us. Just for reference, the "sun" is about the size of a ping pong ball. Jupiter is about the size of a giant marble, maybe a bit larger. The planets and distances between are not to scale but served our purpose well. We were wanting to learn about orbits, positions of the planets, and sequence from the sun. The only thing I would have liked to change was the fact that the set doesn't include Pluto. Yes, I know it's no longer considered a planet as it is now considered a "dwarf planet". Still, I would've liked to have it in the set. 5Disappointing projectIf you are looking for a frustrating craft that is completely inaccurate then this is for you! My daughter and I encountered nothing but frustration trying to assemble this plastic garbage. Earth would not connect properly and when I tried to fix it, it completely broke, so we are missing OUR planet, great. Secondly, the quality of this entire project is poor at best. I am so disappointed I would never buy again, or recommend. Unfortunately I had put this away after my purchase for a few months so I won t be able to return, but hopefully can save someone else $10. 1Great project for kidsGot this for my 6 year old kids' holiday gift. We painted and partially assembled it together during a couple of afternoons, then I strung it together by myself. It's definitely not a project they could do on their own, but it was fine with an adult helping -- as long as the adult isn't too picky about the end product! Overall it was relatively simple and the directions were good enough.Pros:* Sufficient paint. We did though run out of some colors -- don't expect to use the same color on several planets.* Easy to snap the planets together -- and pull them apart again if needed. Kids did the painting and snapping together themselves, once I showed them how to align the pieces correctly (so the two halves of the hole for the hangar pieces line up).* Plenty of fishing line for hanging, though you won't think so when you first see it.* Assembly is easy enough, though still enough challenge for an older kid to enjoy. I did have to map it all out on the table before starting to string them on the support pieces, since the planets are close enough in size that it's not easy to tell them apart.Cons:* I was surprised to see that the unpainted planets were a dark blue plastic -- most paint colors covered it OK, though needing a bit more than they would otherwise for coverage, but getting a light color meant first "priming" it with white.* Barely enough glow paint, and it doesn't glow much. It does if you shine a bright light directly on it for a few minutes, and then make the room really dark. But since it's a mobile, most kids' bedrooms aren't going to have a bright light *under* it. And having one over it simply makes the top of the planets glow -- which you can't see unless you're really tall.Another minor problem I ran into is that the assembly instructions showing where on each hangar to hang each planet are only in centimeters. I couldn't find a ruler anywhere in my house with metric on it so I had to pull out the calculator and convert to inches. I won't deduct any stars for that, since I'd rather the US went metric anyway, and I have no good excuse for not having a dual-system ruler in the house. But be forewarned.Liked, it and would buy it again. 4so I bought him this as a surprise so we could build it together and he'd have something cool in his roomMy son is obsessed with space and wants to be an astronaut, so I bought him this as a surprise so we could build it together and he'd have something cool in his room. Sadly it was pretty disappointing from the get go. Firstly, it was WAY smaller than I thought it would be, though it's my own fault for not reading the measurements before buying. Secondly, it is not all that sturdy. The set is very rickety and the planets don't stay together well. Maybe after painting they stay closed, but we didn't get that far. The planets kept coming apart, and after a day and a half various halves were missing and unable to be recovered. Eventually we had to just throw the set away. 3there is a great deal of work and painting involved to make it ...Unless you're a professional artist--with a variety of paint and equipment--there is no way this will turn out the way it is pictured in the example. All the planets come in either blue halves or gold halves, and you get little pots of paint to make it yourself. I understand when buying a model airplane, etc, there is a great deal of work and painting involved to make it appear like the photo on the box. However, it's possible. There is no way possible to create the solar system depicted on the box. Also, the glow paints were dried out and useless. I tried and ended up throwing it out. 2HARD to put together and even harder to paint!I didn't realize we had to paint the planets. I pulled this out for a quick build for a lesson and we had to stop our lessons for 2 hours to build and paint this thing. My own fault for not reading the description, but this was HARD to put together. I got a rubber mallet to try and get the pieces to click together. Some wouldn't and I had to pull out the super glue. The paint and paint brush is a joke. Luckily I had my own paint and brushes on hand, but it was still very hard to paint. The planets are SO TINY! Now for me to figure out what planet I painted which color and try to put this thing in the proper order. NOT looking forward to it. 2
