Customer Reviews

it is an awesome kit that TAKES TIMEMy daughter and her cousin had a blast. They are 3 and 4. Because of the age I had to be there to help, it is an awesome kit that TAKES TIME, it's not easy getting the crystals out, it took us two days :) because we spread it out for them. But it's well worth the buy. It's also VERY MESSY lol we ended up doing it outside. 5Great fun!I must mention that we haven't tried very many of these digging sets before, but that being said, my kids loved it. They're 10, 6 and 4. And honestly if you throw in a few plastic butter knives, you don't have to worry about rationing out dig time. (Yes, they shared one block.) Anyways, the plaster was a good enough consistency that it wasn't extremely hard to get through and not so sandy that it crumbles in between your fingers. The rocks were a bit lumped in together, but (in my opinion) had enough plaster in-between. Also it's worth mentioning that the older the kid the faster they seem to go through it... Should seem obvious but I think sometimes people buy this thinking it's going to keep a 10 year old entertained for hours. It won't. The box says it comes with 8 crystals. I believe we ended up with 11. I've including pictures of just a few I could track down, kids hid the rest. We got a few amethyst, rose quartz and just a single dolomite and clear quartz. I was actually impressed by the size of most of these. Only about three of them were chip sized. The tools were decent enough, the hammer/scraper combo was alright I guess, the hammer isn't very heavy, it's plastic but I don't think you'd want it to be heavy because the rocks are real, quartz will break! They did the job just fine. All that being said, if the price point is less than $10, this is the best bang for your buck. 5Ok for the priceBought this for my 10 year old for xmas. Decent kit for the price. The digging tool is decent. The paint brush is useless (too flimsy). The display case that comes with it is also useless because most of the gems won't fit, they're too big. The pouch is small. I happened to have one that was bigger so I gave that to my son. We did get an extra 5 gems in this kit but honestly most of them are boring cloudy white stones. I think this is what to expect for the price though. I also purchased the National Geographic kit that has 15 stones. Cost was 3 times more than this one but the stones are nicer. I included a side by side picture. Son enjoyed both kits. All comes down to what you want to spend I guess. 4My 8 year old loved this and wants another.I got this for my 8 year old son for his birthday this summer. He and his 10 year old brother, loved it! It took about an hour to get all of the gems out because they were only in 2 clusters, instead of spread throughout the block. After sawing an inch deep or so, I was able to break the block in half and both boys enjoyed digging out the gems out of their own blocks. I had a metal scraping tool from a scratch art set, and it made it easier to get the gems out. MESSY, but fun. They worked on a plastic platter to contain the powder. 5Impressed!! Girls 5, 7 & 8.5 LOVE it!Seriously a great purchase! I have three girls and each of them worked for over 90 minutes each on her kit. My quiet, reserved 8.5 year old was the most enthusiastic and diligent, examining each discovery with the included magnifying plastic glass, looking up the stones in the booklet, and recoding the information on the included collection display (parent assistance is definitely necessary for this part bc there are tabs that need to be inserted on the collection card). Be warned, she did declare, "I don't think I want to be a doctor anymore, I really want to be an archeologist!" :) The 7 year old really loved how realisticly hard her rock was - I was impressed with how it held up and didn't crumble even after multiple gems had been dislodged (as others have also mentioned, this dd wore sunglasses when blowing the dust to protect her eyes!). The 5 year old needed a bit of help scratching her way through her rock (a bit of water on the included paint brush/duster helped a lot) but loved how many "Jewels" she kept finding. So happy with this project - with the quality of the rock and gems, with how much my kids learned, with the keepsake pouch and collection chart that they LOVE. 5Hours of entertainmentThis was really fun! I bought this for my 6 (almost 7) year old for Christmas. He loves anything to do with rocks and gemstones so this was perfect for him! He opened it right away and got to work. I love that it was a bit of a challenge for him and had to get his big brother to help him with it. When he first opened it he thought that it would be easy and take him less than an hour to get through, but he was wrong! He had to take several breaks and kept coming back to it. It was finished within a day, but only because he kept at it. This could easily take several days to get through. The stones themselves were pretty nice. Some small, some larger. Most don't fit on the little card they give you or fit under the plastic they give to hold them on the card. We were ok with that. He wanted to touch and feel them anyway, not hide them under plastic. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase. 5This is the best gem mining dig I have gotten yetThis is the best gem mining dig I have gotten yet. The Smithsonian gem dig was horrible with very very small gems. This kit on the other hand has very very nice sized gems. Somehow I had accidentally ordered 2 sets and I did not want to send it back. It was perfect. My son and I each got out own brick to excavate. It was so much fun. He got impatient with how long it wa staking and I keep trying to tell him that's how it goes but finally he got me impatient as well lol. So I grabbed two flat head screwdrivers and went to town. Mine ended up with 10 gems, his 8.I got 1 amethyst, 1 dolomite, 3 agates, 1 clear quartz/crystal, and i think 4 rose crystals. He got 2 amethyst, 1 red agate, 5Great "independent" Activity for my 5 year oldAnyone looking for an activity that'll keep your little ones independently occupied (without the constant "Mommy/Daddy"...) NEEDS to have this in the toy closet. It's definitely an outdoor activity, since the plaster makes dust. And it's obviously a one time use, but for $10 at least an hour of play, who can beat it? The tool that comes with it has a serrated edge on one side (like a dull butter knife) and a little mallet on the other side. He used it like a saw. Seriously, he's doing it now and has been at it long enough for me to empty dishes, load dishes, check email and write this review :)The stones themselves are a decent size, about the size of a large pebble or gum all. The box said the block has 8 stones but ours had 10. I'd say it's perfect for ages 5-8.The only improvement I'd see for this product (but not enough to remove a star), was actually a comment my son made "Mommy, shouldn't there be safety glasses in the box too?"Such a cute activity, ordering a couple for my mom to have on hand for when the kids are there. 5Great samples, hard to digThis was a gift for my 4 year old obsessed with rock collecting. The crystals we got were quite nice. There were 12-15 samples - a couple were larger than an inch and others about a half in in diameter. There were only 5 types of rocks/crystals so we got a lot of repeats. The digging process was much harder than expected. We've done other activities like this where he can use a plastic chisel and plastic hammer to easily break apart the material. But this block is solid plaster and the provided blunt, plastic digging tools that come in the kit barely put a dent in it. My son worked on it for about 10-15 minutes and lost interest when he didn't get anywhere. I took over and could barely get a small crevice dug out of it. I finally had to get out a real chisel and hammer to break up digging material to get the stones. 4Big mess but fun for kidsI bought this for my almost 5 year old for Christmas. She was very excited about it. Since the weather is cold here we had to do this inside. I wish we could have done it outside because it was very messy. When I bought it I thought it would be a brick of coarse sand. It was actually more like plaster. When we dug in it there was a very fine dust created. I put the brick on an old baking sheet but the dust quickly covered the table and chair. Not the end of the world, but parents should be aware. My daughter liked digging in it but her arm got tired before we found the first crystal. We had to take numerous breaks. The kit contained a plastic paintbrush and a plastic combo hammer/knife. The hammer was pretty useless but the knife was handy. A metal butter knife is better. She was very excited when we found the crystals. The kit comes with little plastic things to put your crystals in. There is also a small bag made of felt to put your crystals in. The bag is small and cheaply made. The guide and instructions were very basic but the crystals were easy to identify. There were 8 crystals in the brick and they were around an inch in length each. Another note of warning for parents: the instructions warn the child should wear an apron or old clothes because the dust can stain. We used an apron but she was literally covered head to toe. The dust turns a greenish yellow colored when it gets wet. I'm hoping it doesn't really stain. 4
