Not at all Sturdy when Built -- Topples Over When BumpedThe quality of these are superb and I bought them on super discount. The instruction booklet is fairly easy to follow (for me, not for my kids). My biggest gripe is that these are not at all stable. We have built them several times only to accidentally hit them and the entire thing falls down. So disappointing for a kid (and parent) when it takes 10 minutes to build and only get to watch one marble go down before it all topples over. I don't want to superglue them so that we can change the design and build new things each time. If anyone has advice on how to make this more sturdy, I'd love to know. In hindsight, I wish we'd bought a better plastic model.2... for my students (4-6years old) and it is really great quality. You will not be disappointed with the ...I got this for my students (4-6years old) and it is really great quality. You will not be disappointed with the craftsmanship. Here are some possible negatives depending on your situation... It is hard for some of the younger ones (4's) to follow the directions and set up. If they are used to following lego directions (5's and 6's), it should be easy. Directions pretty much need to be followed step by step in order for the run to work properly because of the way the different color coded blocks fit together and function. The booklet does offer many different set up options and the pictures are clear...no reading required. Some children may be able to figure out their own operable run, but so far this has been difficult for my kiddos. It is pretty sturdy when limited to two carefully playing with it at once. It will withstand a little bump, but anything more and it will fall over. There have been a few upsets after quite a bit of time spent setting up. I have noticed that the floor in my classroom is not exactly level....we had to hunt for a perfectly level spot. Really this is important because the run operates more on momentum gained at the ramps and spirals rather than on gravity/sloping. The bridges etc. are to be perfectly level. There was a learning curve, and we had to help in building for at least a week. Now they are able to play with it more independently. I think some of these "difficulties" may actually be seen as advantages...fine motor, accurately following directions, working together, problem solving etc etc.4 Ages 4-99 is really trueOur four year old (with the mind of an engineer) can t put it together on her own, but she loves playing with it. So do the adults, who compete after bedtime to develop new configurations. It is beautifully made, and as stable as one could hope for, given small pieces stacked high. I would certainly buy it again, but there are a couple of disappointments.First, it is not a limitless playground for the imagination. There are three configurations suggested, and all three work well. But there aren t unlimited creative possibilities. Second, it may be a German toy developer, but it is actually made in China. Still, the pieces are beautifully shaped and stained and none are defective. There are plenty of marbles.5Giving it 3 stars despite that my kids love it but there are some significant design flawsGiving it 3 stars despite that my kids love it but there are some significant design flaws.1. The base pieces need to be wider to support a heavy upper load. It is super easy to knock over once you get past 2 or 3 blocks high.2. The tracks seem to be warped so the marbles don't actually travel the way they're supposed to and end up getting stuck in a valley created by the warped pieces. Not sure if that's intentional or if I just got a bad box of pieces.3. There are plastic parts. The whole reason I purchased a wood set was to avoid the plastic. While the pieces are very few, it was upsetting that they were there to begin with when I know you can make a wood equilavent with a little creativity.Since I spent so much money on it I am quite disappointed and I'm not sure I'll buy this brand again.3Great Marble RunWe had gotten a plastic marble run as a gift and it was TERRIBLE! It was hard to put together and not intuitive at all.My four year old daughter LOVES this set. It came with a few suggested builds with easy to follow directions. We store it in a dresser drawer (in play space). For the block parts I use a plastic shoe bin and used a Sterilite Divided Case to organize the smaller parts and that works great!Sterilite 14028606 Divided Case, Clear with Blue Aquarium Handle and Latches, 6-Pack5A great, quality setThis is a great product! We gave this to my almost 5 year old son for Christmas because he had wanted a marble run. We had bought one a year or two previously that was plastic and the pieces cracked and broke almost immediately, so I was hesitant to spend more money on one - but I'm glad I did.The construction of this is high quality, nice wood. The pieces are smooth and the packaging is useful for carrying around to different areas of the house. The run comes with a great booklet of multiple designs you can build (in addition to designing your own) and plenty of marbles. We have had great fun building the different sets and testing them. There are some inserts and accelerators you use to make the set work properly, and despite the good instructions, we often forget to put one in, so our marbles go out of the holes to early, but it is fun for the kids to test and determine what we need to make it work - and then of course the joy of a full run.Some of the pieces have toggles so each marble will switch directions from the previous, which makes the set more interesting as the marbles don't exit the run at the same place each time.The only challenge I've seen thus far is that because its a marble run with pieces that slot into each other, it can be a bit wobbly, and we have spent a bit of time building and then have someone accidentally bump it and have the whole thing fall down. That is a bummer when you have invested some time, but it happens. I do with perhaps the pieces were made to fit a bit more into each other so the chance of accidental knock-over was less.All in all, a great set and we are currently considering buying another (or an add on) for my son's birthday since he does seem to enjoy it. I do believe this set will hold up with time and use, so well worth the price.5Now with plastic parts, not all woodI will start by saying that we've had a couple versions of this marble run for a couple years and it is amazing. However, I just purchased this additional set to supplement the other sets we have and I'm very disappointed that the accelerators and purple blocks are now made of plastic and not wood. In the photos, the previous sets are on the right and the new set is on the left.3Best marble run set on the marketBest marble run set on the market by far. This set is amazingly high quality with perfect fitting pieces and great instructions.All of the kids (and adults) love it from 5yr - 9yr in our family. Our 9yr +7yr olds work together building and reading the directions and it's wonderful to see them work together.We tried another cheaper (1/3 price) marble set from another company and it's horrible compared to the Hape sets.Also, we purchased a basic wood block set and then we could make even crazier marble runs (see picture).5you spend more time rebuilding after a crash than playingThe building of the structure is not that easy in the first place. There are a lot of smaller parts that you don't see in the picture or in the video that must be added to the assembly. If you don't line up the blocks perfectly, the marbles get stuck. Also, the teeter-totter won't stay in place. After it dumps it's cache of marbles to one side, the totter slips off the lip and if you don't put it back quickly no more marbles will make it down.The pieces fit on top of each other like blocks with a small lip for support. The problem is, if you have an over-enthusiastic child (or marble-crazed cat) The slightest bump will bring this whole structure crashing down.You spend a lot of time re-building and trying hard not to bump the darn thing, while making sure the teeter-totter gets put back into place (don't bump it )and the blocks don't get twisted the slightest fraction so the marbles will flow.2Terrific Product But Colors Could be Improved UponAn interesting and high quality product that I expect to find very enjoyable to share with my nieces and nephew when they visit. I bought it for them, but my mother and I both found it entertaining also after I opened the item up. If I find any negative about the product, it is in the color choices. Generally speaking, the colors seem fine at first, but upon following the examples in the user manual, some of the colors are hard to distinguish from one another in the printed manual. Rather blue and what might be turquoise, I'd get rid of two such similar colors and substitute something significantly different. The same is true of the red and orange blocks although to a lesser degree. Finally, a box with organizing partitions to store the pieces in would be useful, just to help protect the nice wood pieces from bouncing around and getting scuffed up when the box is carried. Overall though, a terrific product that I can readily see how it will help stimulate a child's mind.5
